Additional Information:  This strong figure is the most recognized and significant sculpture from the Chokwe people representing "tshibinda ilunga"(Chibind Irung), the mythical  ancestor, and cultural hero of the Lunda , Luba and Chokwe. Chibunda Ilunga figures are recognized by the enormous, sweeping hairdos on top of an enlarged head,  huge open hands, often displayed in a welcoming fashion as seen on the offered figure. At their best, these statues are among of the most dynamic of all ethnic creations. Less common, though still significant, are the large male ancestor statues, and small, rare female statues, thought to represent queens or promote fertility.

The cultural hero Chibinda Ilunga, came from the Luba area to the Lunda and married a Lunda princess, Rueji. He brought 'civilizing' cultural elements of the Lunda and became a ruler there. Long and complex story with love, sex, violence, and a lot of unhappy brothers who left.
