Damage/Repair holes, cut fringes

A very prestigious textile made out of raffia fibers and tied in deep colors. The edges show wild fringes.

This wonderful textile comes from the Dida people who live in Ivory Coast.  For ceremonial occasions Dida women plait strands of raffia, without a loom, into loincloth or skirts, rice bags, cloaks and kerchiefs. The patterns are created by means of tied resists and dyeing with natural dyes in a palette of forest colours. All motifs are formed solely by variations in the tie and dye technique.

For more information on the technique of tie and dye of the Dida,  see John Gillow, African Textiles, 2003p. 67:

For a similar example see John Gillow, Printed and Dyed Textiles From Africa. University of Washington Press. Seattle. 2001., fig. 32

I have examined this piece and agree with the description.
