Additional Information: A truly uniuqe and expressive piece of art that displays signature Dogon traits.  The general form is familiar, with the head and tail of a horse on each end of the headrest.  Three rectangular holes in the top lead to hollowed chambers in the body of the headrest.  The traders indicated to us that this is an item used in divination for the Dogon people, and that the spherical chambers are used to hold medicine for the anscestors or spirits.  Mounted on a beautiful dark wood base, this awesome carving is prepared for immediate display in any collection.

Dogon art is not a single fixed style as has been often characterized in discussions of their sculpture, for the age of Dogon art extends to the past as early as the 12th century and continues to be created in the present with a number of sub-styles measured against the core of an identifiable Dogon art and style. The Dogon interchange stylistic elements with neighboring groups producing an interesting hybridism in some of their interesting sub-styles.
