Additional Information:   The Mitsogho are a small culture numbering about 13,000. They originally lived near the coast, but raids during the slave trade period as well as conflicts with marauding bands of the BaKwele forced them inland. Today they can be found in Central Gabon, in dense forests along the right bank of the Upper Ngoume River. They share artistic characteristics and rituals with their neighbors, the Vuvi, and there can be confusion in the positive identification of their ritual objects--particularly masks. The Tsogho and Vuvi share a common belief in ancestor worship---and social cohesion is insured by the practices of a men's society known as "bwete." Initiation into the Bwete involves a painful ordeal involving hallucinogenic plants, at which time the initiates are taught about the masks and statues used by the society. While women cannot be members of Bwete, they have their own, more informal, societies which function in similar ways.
