Overall Condition Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents, and have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use.  We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings.  Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage.

Additional Information: A flute made of wood with a beautiful worn patina and geometric motifs!  This flute, as it is called by the African traders, would also be considered a whistle, in Western terms.  It may have been made for more decorative purposes and may not be able to make noise.


One of the most common musical instruments found among the various people of Burkina Faso is the top blown flute. Flutes are widely traded and therefore often difficult to attribute to one group or another. Lobi, Bwa, Bobo, Nuna, Senufo, Gurunsi, Mossi and so forth have produced similar flutes.  Our example came with the label of Lobi flute. This is a well used example from the wear around the mouthpiece and on the surface.


Across Burkina Faso flutes such as this were during mask dances, for hunting or war. Whistles such as this are played either singly or in concert with other instruments such as the long chord drums, the calabash drums, horns, iron gongs, finger bells, and small bells.  The player will hold the flute close to the lower lip and blown across to produce a pleasant high pitched tone. Often used by men and boys during ceremonies and dance masks they are integral parts of social life and serve to provide musical support to important rites of passage for young and old. They accompany ceremonies in close association with local languages which are tonal and match language patterns.
