Additional Information: A couple of guardians hold the lid of this vessel closed under their chins.  The lid has embossed carvings of lizards, and removing the lid reveals a spacious bowl.  The details on the figures illustrate the artistry and craft of the Luba wooden carvers.

This carving may fall into the categoty of divination devices used during by mediums, mvidye, as powerful objects which purpose was to communicate with the spirits and to guide the medium during a consultation. 

The Luba are an ancient people, having established themselves in their homelands late in the 16th century. They continued to flourish as a major regional power until late in the 19th century.Though no longer a powerful kingdom, Luba art continues to enchant and inspire art lovers around the globe.
