Additional information:  Padres were originally Chinese-produced beads taken by traders to America, India and Africa during the 1700s and 1800s. Spanish explorers carried them to the North American Southwest where Catholic priests supposedly gave them to converts among the Native Americans, hence the nickname “padre.” The original padres were opaque and either a turquoise or sky-blue shade which the Indians thought were “a piece of the sky that had fallen to earth.” Lewis and Clark also mention the padre bead as being very important for trade, referring to it as a “chief bead.” Today beads made in Europe that resemble the original padres also carry this name and can be found in many translucent colors.
