Description
A solid block of wood intricately carved to represent a Fon King.
The kingdom of Benin originated in the 900s when the Edo people settled in West Africa's rainforests. Led by powerful rulers known as Obas, they built a prosperous kingdom adorned with brass-decorated palaces by the 1400s. Over time, the Obas expanded their territory into an empire and engaged in trade with European merchants. However, by the 1600s, they began to lose control, leading to a decline in strength and unity. In 1897, Benin was forcefully annexed by the British Empire following a military invasion, marking the abrupt end of the kingdom's independence.
