Mossi Flute on Custom Stand Burkina Faso
Width: 2.5
Description
Mossi, the largest single group living in Burkina Faso, trace their roots back to horsemen who migrated north from present-day Ghana in the 1500s. They are celebrated for their splendidly crafted masks and opulent costumes that appear in ceremonial masquerades. The elderly are venerated with stately funerals with masked dancers wearing masks representing ancestors, spiritual forces, and Nature. Additionally, Ninande sculptures exhibited a variety of functions and were crafted with characteristic Mossi facial and body lines as well as a ringed neck. A variation of the gyonfo coiffure adorns this graceful female statue, granting her a unique air of majesty.
