Throughout the vast region of Central Africa intricately carved staffs and Axes (adz) serve as chiefly regalia and badges of office. Honored elders and senior members of the group also carried axes like this. They were either inherited or given to the chief as a gift in recognition of their rank and social status. As badges of office and prestige the axes would be either simply carved or sculpted in complex forms.
