Yoruba Divination Tray with Elaborate Motifs Africa

Additional Information:The borders of this old and well-used circular tray are decorated with elaborate symbols including  faces of Eshu, stylized snake, lizard, crocodile, cowries, ect. Trays like this are used by a priest-diviner (known among the Yoruba as a Babalawo) during divination directed to prevent illness or forestall bad luck. Yoruba Ifa oracle trays are marked by the head of Eshu, which is positioned opposite the diviner. The circle on the back serves a unique ritual function. It is fed once a year by the members of a secret society. During this act of feeding, it gives increase Ase (power/energy/life force) to the diviner and increases the power of the divination. It is also used in some questionable acts, such as using divination for negative purposes.
